Garden Update

Good news! The blog has not jinxed the garden!  I have continued harvesting a few cherry tomatoes every day and I've made lots of batches of yellow zucchini muffins for the family.  I'm getting some beans every day, but we haven't cooked them yet because I only have 8-10 in the bag right now.  Hopefully more will be ready soon!  The bell peppers are getting close to pickable and I've had a couple cucumbers per week.

You should know that it's not all success stories in the garden.  I had trouble with the deer attacking my plants when they were young, some sort of bug is eating the cabbage like crazy, and bush bean plants keep falling over when they get a couple beans on them.  I'm also not having much luck with the carrots I'm trying to grow.  I've had them planted since the beginning, but they are still just the size of my pointer finger!  Any tips on growing carrots?  I'd love to have a huge crop of those! What I do have to say is that my zinnias are AMAZING!  I think they are quickly rising to the top of my list of favorite flowers.  They are so bright and beautiful.  I'll definitely be planting even more of them next year!

I did a little photo shoot in the garden today:

The Zinnias:

Baby Watermelon!

Fall Crop of Spinach starting to grow:

Cabbage with lots of holes from some sort of caterpillar, I think:

Cherry tomatoes--starting to turn red!

These guys were the size of the tip of my thumb in my last post.

The first sunflower bloomed this week!

Cucumbers!  I'll definitely be planting more cucumber and less summer squash next year.  Yum!

My pumpkin plants are on the right.  They are blooming like crazy, but no baby pumpkins for pictures yet.

And, of course, the kids:

Growing Pains

We've got a lot of growing up going on around here!  Here's what's going on:

1) Andrew's preschool this year is in the afternoons, so getting him used to staying up all day is the goal of the month.  During naptime, Andrew now gets to hang out in the playroom instead of trying to nap.  We are on day 3 of this transition.  On day 1, he happily played during quiet time and then fell asleep instantly around 7:15 that night.  On day 2, he was super cranky all morning and then decided to put himself on the futon in the basement during quiet time and he napped.  Ooops.  We're currently on day 3, so we'll see how this goes.

2) I decided to put Matthew in underwear on Saturday and decided we're just going to go for it and see how he does.  So far, he's doing ok.  He can go long stretches without an accident and goes when I set a timer and tell him it's "potty time."  But, he hasn't taken the reigns yet to tell me when he needs to go.  Wait, let me take that back.  He took the reigns for a full hour while we were at church yesterday.  The boy went FOUR TIMES in that hour.  He also takes the reigns when I'd like him to stay in bed for nap or bedtime.  Anyway, I'm giving it a few more days to see if it clicks.  He's excited about underwear for now, so we'll see.  Andrew's really hoping he succeeds because Matthew will get a trip to the toy store and Andrew's hoping Matthew will pick out something for him too!

3) Catherine's 2nd tooth on the bottom arrived 2 days after her first one.  She's been a little fussy still, so I'm thinking the top 2 may be making an appearance soon.  I'm sure you're on the edge of your seat.  Stay tuned!

So, this teething, potty training, and dropping a nap is leading to me upping my coffee intake and trying to get to bed earlier.  Seriously, I pass out an hour after the kids these days!  Pathetic!  Hopefully all the transitions will go smoothly and I'll get my energy back soon when we get to the other side.

Catherine's First Tooth!

After a few fussy days and lots of drool and chewing, this little lady successfully cut her first tooth.  It's way too tiny to get a picture yet, but her toothless grin is going to be leaving us soon.

I hope I don't jinx it.

Since we bought a house, I've been pretty excited about starting a vegetable garden.  However, I have a horrible record for gardening and was sure my efforts would be fruit(or in this case, vegetable)-less.  I've killed several basil plants, lots of flowers in my flower boxes, and I think I managed to harvest only 10 cherry tomatoes in my last gardening attempt.  But, I think I'm ready to go public on this (for my 1-2 loyal blog readers).  My garden seems to be working.  It's producing veggies and even flowers that I planted from seed!

Also, I'm obsessed.  B often catches me sitting on the deck and just staring at the garden, I tend to run out and check the garden in the mornings, and I even caught myself flipping through old pictures on my phone and passing quickly over Baby-Catherine pictures while stopping and zooming in on previous garden pictures.  Yes, I did that.  I even ordered seeds to plant in the fall that grow through the winter and help replenish the nutrients in your garden--it's called Green Manure!

Ok, so here's a little glimpse of what's going on in our back yard these days.  If gardening bores you, stop reading now.

So, this is what our vegetable garden looked like when we moved in last summer.  It was full of sunflowers and weeds.

Here's the guys beginning the big task of tilling, digging, and adding compost to the garden last fall.

Even after removing tons in the fall, here's all the weeks coming up this spring

And a deer that decided to come and feast on those tulips.  Fun and exciting then, not so much anymore.

We went through every square foot of the garden and sifted the dirt to remove all the old bulbs and removed all the weeds.  I say that WE did it, but the majority of the work was done by B--thanks, hon.

Finally, at the end of May, we were ready to plant.  I started with tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, marigolds, basil, dill, and rosemary plants and started lettuce, spinach, carrot, cabbage, and peas from seed.

May 26, 2014

Here we are a month later.  I added summer squash, a watermelon plant, B scored some horseradish from a friend at work, and I planted some zinnia seeds between the marigolds.  Oh, and I planted a few pumpkin seeds and bush beans.  Sadly, the bell peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, and marigolds got attacked by deer while we were away camping and have spent the last several weeks recovering.  I also scattered some petunias to attract bees and make things look more colorful while everything was so tiny.

And, about 2 weeks later.  Um, did not realize how large summer squash plants get!

First harvest of peas on July 17, 2014.  These should've been planted in march instead of June, so we will get very few peas...however, I read that I can try for a fall crop!

Sides with dinner on July 20th--ok, looks like we may actually get some vegetables from this vegetable garden after all!

Our first tomatoes are turning red finally!
After recovering from the deer, new bell peppers are growing!
I think I'm gonna have too many summer squash/yellow zucchini.
The bush beans are starting to produce!

I haven't bought lettuce in a long time.

Ok people, now that I've shared all this, let's pray I haven't jinxed myself!  And, to warn you, I think now that I've introduced you to my garden and my new obsession, you'll be getting more updates on what's growing and being harvested than you want.

For those who just check out the blog to see the offspring, here you go:

Catholic Catherine!

We had Catherine's baptism on June 8th.  My brother and sister-in-law, Brian and Mary, are Catherine's godparents and we were so thankful that Brian and my mom (aka Nana) made the trip out to SLC for the big day!  Catherine's baptism was during the 5pm mass on Sunday night, and since it was Brian's first time out here, we spent the rest of the weekend exploring the mountains and some of the sites.

Nana and Andrew enjoying the hammock:

We went up Millcreek Canyon for a cookout on Saturday night.  Matthew managed to get a soot handprint on his face.

On Sunday, we booked a sitter for a few hours in the morning and went out for a relaxing kidless breakfast and then a walk around Silver Lake up Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Then, it was time for the baptism!  My mom got Catherine dressed in a 75 year old baptismal gown that was brought to the US from Italy by my great grandmother.  All of the girls in my family have been baptized wearing it, including me and my mom!

We had some friends, Fr. Andrew, and our 87 year old neighbor join us for dinner in the yard after mass.  As low-key as I tried to make it, it was still a lot of work preparing for the gathering.  Thanks for all your help, Mom (one of my few regular blog readers). :)

I never found a place with Marzipan in Pittsburgh, but a nearby bakery had it here and it was so good!  Yes!!

Passing on some Godfatherly wisdom, I'm sure.

Of course I had to take Brian downtown to show him Temple Square:

Thanks again for coming, Brian and Mom!
